It seems odd, right?
How is it that the system that monitors tire pressure can't tell when the tire pressure is back to normal after you re-air your tires?
First, a quick overview of the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). This system is responsible for monitoring the air pressure in your tires and notifying you when it detects low pressure in one or more tires. The TPMS can catch tire punctures early, so you have a chance to slow down and get somewhere safe. It can also detect underinflation from temperature changes or other issues, like a valve stem leak. While it can't tell you exactly what the cause is of the low air pressure, it lets you know something is off. And when it comes to dashboard lights, it's safe to say the TPMS light is one of the most common warnings that drivers encounter. . .and that's good! Just think how many drivers would be on the road with underinflated tires without it.
Now, there are two types of TPMS your vehicle might have: direct and indirect.
Vehicles with direct TPMS have sensors installed on each tire to detect low pressure. When you re-air tires with a direct TPMS, you probably won't need to reset anything.
Vehicles with indirect TPMS calculate tire pressure through differences through the ABS and traction system and wheel rotation speed. There are no sensors on the tires. Vehicles with indirect TPMS usually require a manual reset of the TPMS light, with reasons for this explained in more detail below. It is worth noting that this system tends to be more affordable for vehicle manufacturers and customers, because it is less sophisticated than its counterpart (although there are some vehicles with an indirect TPMS that can tell you which tire has an issue these days, similar to some direct models). While the indirect TPMS came out before direct TPMS and is featured on many older cars, it has also made a comeback on newer vehicles, especially Asian and European cars.
If you've ever had to air up your tires in response to the TPMS light, and you drive a vehicle with an indirect TPMS, you probably had to reset the TPMS (or you had a tire service center do it for you). So how can the TPMS tell you that your tires are low but not sense when they are back to normal?
Answer: The TPMS doesn't know what's normal. You need to teach it.
An indirect system needs to be taught what's normal after the light triggers and the tires are brought back up to where they should be. Remember that the indirect TPMS relies on wheel speed and the ABS and traction systems to help it understand when one or more tires is underinflated. It "knows" it needs to look at wheel speed (wheels with underinflated tires spin faster) and some other data to make this determination, but it has no frame of reference for what the tires should start at for the correct pressure levels.
Depending on your vehicle make and model, there are different methods to perform the reset. One common approach is to press and hold a designated button. For example, there might be a button on the driver's side somewhere. Another method involves using the vehicle's infotainment system. On some vehicles, the TPMS resets after a certain amount of driving time and distance. Consult your owner's manual for specific instructions.
It's important to perform a reset so you know when an issue occurs. If you're driving around with the TPMS light on all the time, it won't do you any good if you get a flat but you think the warning light is on because it hasn't been reset.
If you need assistance with a reset after correcting tire pressure in an indirect TPMS, or you need another service, like sensor replacement for a direct TPMS, contact Delaney Tire & Auto in North Carolina. We provide TPMS service at locations serving Wilmington, NC and Rocky Mount, NC.
